America…

He Said with an Exhale of Admiration

Feb 2013

16mm Found Footage Film In making this film I used a combination of film that I had shot and film that I had found. I meant to test with pacing and imagery to convey escalation in intensity of the viewing experience. There is one part that I am particularly fond of, the cut from a shot of a plush monkey to flesh being cut with scissors. The monkey causes the viewer to briefly develop a false sense of security that the imagery will continue to be pleasant but is surprised by such a gruesome shot of flesh being cut afterwards. I meant the film to be representative of the fast-paced lives and short attention spans of the American people. The man with the binoculars in the beginning is a third party viewing American society, perhaps from an anthropological perspective. The sequence beginning with a goat on a rock, then two football linemen, then a plush monkey, then flesh being cut, then a pile of rocks was meant to symbolize desire for dominance leading to violence, vulnerability, injury, and death.
